The only significant gap in the Sonos arsenal is high-res music, which the company resolutely doesn’t support. The Sonos Five delivers sound that is more thrilling, agile and boot-shaking than anything else at this level –from Sonos or its competitors. A lot has happened in the multi-room market since the Sonos Play:1 last entered our test rooms in 2013. Still, if you’re a dedicated Sonos fan looking for a lounge speaker that you can plonk your telly on, there’s loads to like about the Playbase. That's because it can be placed upright or horizontally, and will deliver sound in stereo on its own (when positioned on its long side) but when synced with another Five, each will deliver half of the sound in a more conventional stereo pair configuration.

cm, the Sub Mini uses a clever driver layout to help maximise its performance while producing a claimed low-frequency response down to 25Hz. Sonos also has a range of in-wall, in-ceiling and waterproof outdoor speakers with architectural speaker specialist Sonance. His specialities include all things mobile, headphones and speakers that he can't justifying spending money on. It can be positioned upright too, you see, to create a stereo pair comprising two Fives or as part of a home theater system with a Sonos Arc, say. Well, the last Play:5 was mightily good to start with – and the new all-white or all-black styling does look slightly sleeker.In addition to playing your personal digital music collection, Sonos gives you access to millions of songs and thousands of radio stations by partnering with AUPEO, Deezer, iheartradio, JUKE, Last. Not only does the Play:5’s only wire look rather stylish by the standards of such things, it’s also a more environmentally-friendly, PVC and halogen-free cable too.

Sonos also has its own support site where you can learn about other common issues and share tips and tricks for the popular sound system with the rest of the Sonos community. Do bear in mind, though, this width can be helped or hindered by the size, shape and furnishings of your room, because this is a system that relies upon bouncing sound off walls. It makes a huge difference to the presentation, to the extent that if you’re an Android user it’s well worth getting a generous iPhone-owning friend to tune your Playbase for you.This gives it greater flexibility for placement as well as a more ‘natural’ look when used in a stereo pair.
