About this deal

The tour virtually destroyed The Cure. At its conclusion, Gallup left the band, Smith went to work with Siouxsie And The Banshees and the two men did not speak to each other for the next 18 months. This was followed by a period of positive and eclectic sounds, peaking with 1987’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. The double album was a huge success, charting in America. The Cure were continually seen as a pop band, and Smith was more fed up than ever. He wrote songs that were true to his vision for The Cure, intent on making a masterpiece while he was still 29. With Disintegration, he certainly succeeded. In any case, that power is what controlled Prayer For Rain and almost obscured the fact that it is not that good a song. But then, it was from that point that the problems began to build even with this charismatic centre and the none-more-Cure elements of low-slung/high note bass and rising clouds of synthesisers given thrust by circular drum patterns.

[199] YearIt was weird with Disintegration. We actually had more stuff than we did for the Kiss Me double-album. We could quite easily have done a triple-album. But it could have become almost unlistenable, really. Some of the stuff we didn’t put on the album was very ‘noisy,’ just like slabs of noise.

Unlike most Cure albums, Disintegration is a pre-conceived group of Smith’s autobiographical songs that uniformly express one particular mood – gloom, yet stopping just short of communicating total despair like Pornography and Faith. In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave Disintegration four-and-a-half out of five stars, and applauded the band by saying, "The Cure's gloomy soundscapes have rarely sounded so alluring [and] the songs– from the pulsating, ominous 'Fascination Street' to the eerie, string-laced 'Lullaby'– have rarely been so well-constructed and memorable." [9] Erlewine went on to praise Disintegration for being "darkly seductive", and "a hypnotic, mesmerizing record". [9] Pitchfork praised the record, admitting " Disintegration stands unquestionably as Robert Smith's magnum opus." [45] Writer Chris Ott noted that "scant few albums released in the 1980s can boast an opener as grand as 'Plainsong', the most breathtaking, shimmering anthem the band ever recorded." [45] We would have been better off without an encore at all, rather than one that had the night and its energy dribble away. But then, if you were brutal about Disintegration, you’d say that’s what the album itself did, and not even a show this good for its first 45 minutes could fix that.
