All that said, the title’s most impressive accomplishment remains the writing. Exodus takes Artyom and Anna’s satirically under-developed “relationship” from Last Light and transforms it into not just something meaningful, but the most compelling facet of the entire game. Their relationship serves as the driving force for much of the title, and feels authentic in a way that exceedingly few games can pull off. The cast surrounding these two are no slouches either, providing a motley assortment of soldiers, mechanics, and refugees that live and grow alongside one another, across the title’s year-long journey.Beyond that, the Enhanced Edition's visual feature set on PlayStation 5 is entirely consistent with what we saw on Xbox Series X. It has the same level of detail, the same suite of ray traced effects, and the same trades up against the PC version. Even the limited variable rate shading support (used only on forward rendered elements of the presentation) is identical - though the implementation of it on consoles does not necessarily require hardware support. Similar to the VRS used in Call of Duty: Warzone, what we're seeing here can be achieved through exploiting the multi-sample anti-aliasing hardware within the GPU. And it is a bit of a shame that the full Tier Two VRS implementation isn't used on any rendition of the game, not even PC. Temporal upscaling is also used to deliver a decent-looking 4K presentation: internal resolution is lower, but detail is accumulated across frames and incorporated into the one currently rendered. It's just the right amount of open, the UI and sign posting etc is really immersive and integrated into the world, and the shooting is difficult and slow but fits well in the setting. There aren't enough of these single player FPS games anymore, I'll be day 1 for any future releases. The game does write interesting characters. Not the entire crew are rememberable mind you, but there are some good standouts and some good villains you’ll encounter – from a religious zealot in a swamp to a slave-owning baron in a sandy wasteland. However, their characters are never used to their full potential, ultimately leading to disappointing conclusions to their short moments. Linear locations are straightforward, and probably when I enjoyed the game most. Metro Exodus can ooze with the atmosphere when it is concentrated like it does when it is a straightforward path. That kind of focus does wonders for the game, you can tell that is what the developers know best.
