I used it on my medium-haired (similar to german shepherd hair) dog and it did not remove even a single strand of undercoat. I can tell the difference between his top coat and undercoat because they're different colors. However, it did remove some surface loose hair. It does make a mess as the hair gets all over the place, so just beware.
