About this deal

Items in a crewmember’s inventory can be used by them at any time, unless the item card itself indicates otherwise. You cannot use items in the inventory of another member of the crew. New Mechanic: Time Travel! With every turn of a chapter card, hold your breath as you risk plummeting through a rift in time, coming face to face with deadly threats from the distant past. Escape the Dark Sector feels like it improves on the Dark Castle formula in every way. More chapter cards, varied start cards, more bosses, loads of custom dice and a great box to store them all in just makes this a superior product to Dark Castle. I love the previous game, but Dark Sector is going to replace Dark Castle for me. The new mechanics are not that difficult to teach and really give a sense of tactical choice that was at times missing from Dark Castle. The game has much more variety in its core box and feels like a more complete product. It’s another absolutely solid game from Themeborne and I can’t wait to see what they do next. Escape the Dark Sector is a good adventure game. With two types of combat, the gameplay is engaging with decisions to make such as being able to choose your type of combat and what weapon to use. With so much combat in the game, it’s important that this is well-polished and a good mechanism.

Although it is definitely part of the B-movie sci fi madness that is the Dark Sector there is a definite tonal shift. Although in saying that the art of the new cards is beautiful and a refreshing difference from the previous artworks. I think it comes down completely to personal preference whether you enjoy the theme or not but even if you do not care for the time travel shenanigans there are still several encounters that stay on theme and can be mixed in straight out of the box.

Review Summary

When Ranged Combat begins, all members of the crew are assumed to dive into cover where they are safe from enemy fire. Then, you must choose one Ranged Combat action for each member of the crew before simultaneously carrying them out. Ranged Combat Actions Another negative point is that some of the cards in the game are extremely similar. When playing multiple times, it was often difficult to tell if we had already used that same card before. Overall this makes the game feel repetitive even if players actually experience different encounters. Final Thoughts:

With Escape the Dark castle the main choices given to the players were about who goes into the next room first, as they are likely to get wounded, and about taking turns resting in combat. In Dark Sector you feel like you have much more control over your destiny. In doing this the game feels less arbitrary than its predecessor, the wins more meaningful, the losses more understandable.

When drawing any number of item cards, place them face up in a temporary item pool where all players can see them. Then, decide as a group how the items will be distributed among the crew. To take an item, place it in your crewmember’s inventory. The text on each item card describes what it does. Some items must be discarded to be used, but otherwise you can use them multiple times. The second game in the Escape the Dark series, Sector is a simple, sci-fi adventure game with a focus on atmosphere and player cooperation. It takes around 5 minutes to set up, lasts around 45 minutes, and no two games are ever the same.
