What's perhaps also going to be exciting for physical media buffs is that was shot digitally with Arri Alexa XT cameras at 3.4K, receiving a 4K digital intermediate for its theatrical release. We'd lump it into the 'might as well be native 4K' category with Deadpool. In the years since Blade Runner first dazzled and puzzled audiences around the world, a number of different versions of the film have surfaced. There’s the original theatrical cut, the international cut, the much sought-after (and seldom seen) “workprint,” and a 1992 director’s cut that wasn’t actually a director’s cut. Finally, in 2007 and some 25 years after the film’s debut, fans of Blade Runner finally had the chance to see it as its director intended.
Blade Runner 4K Blu-ray truly is a masterpiece with perfect scores all around making it one of the best Blu-ray's ever But it's a film full of many moments of breathtaking vision. You'd have to search far and wide to find a film from 2017 that's this well realised. While Blade Runner felt small and contained, 2049 aims for an epic and sweeping quality that's not far off David Lean's widescreen images.I had seen Alien and that Blade Runner was also directed by Ridley Scott was part of the pitch my dad made in getting me to watch something I'd never heard of. Blade Runner wasn't scary. It wasn't set in space. It was set in this dark and ominous vision of a near future where humanity has all but abandoned the planet that spawned the species. The first time we meet the hero he's watching a giant blimp advertising a better life. It's heady stuff. While some criticize the film for being visually indulgent, style over substance, I would counter that those people just aren't really and honestly looking at the film. There's a lot of substance there, you just have to be paying attention. To that point, I can't watch this film distracted or allow it to be on with distractions around me. Cell phones down, lights off. Ultimately, when you see The Final Cut for yourself, I think you’ll appreciate the tremendous and pain-staking effort that’s been made to smooth out the rough edges in Ridley Scott’s original film. I’ll tell you, I find it extraordinary after all these years to still have the chance to discover so much that’s new in this film. If you love Blade Runner like I do, this new version is a treat. It's days like this one where I wish I had the technology to properly capture UHD images with HDR. I'm aching inside because I just can't do this review justice with images captured from the now ancient VC-1 Blu-ray of 2007. The visual improvement from that first Blu-ray release to this new 2160p 2.40:1 4K transfer is jaw dropping. That first shot of the dark and dreary Los Angeles left me wide-eyed. The amount of visual information and depth of feel was incredibly impactful. The first shot of those dark towered spewing flames with the obelisk Tyrell corporation buildings was stunning. As you get closer and closer to the practical models, you can see all of the little nooks and crannies with an appreciable amount of detail and depth. Then you meet Leon and his work clothes now have a notable crinkly plastic-like look like a cheap uniform on an old toy making him look even more artificial. The journey of discovery, for both K and the audience, examines tropes science-fiction has been digging at since its inception. What does it mean to be human? What defines humanity? The original film touched upon these themes, but they are given more weight in 2049, which makes for a more engaging story.
The overall Atmos is an excellent one, with consistent activity in the height channels. Whether it's K's spinner, voices or Los Angeles' environment (it rains a lot), the height channels have weight and presence. The positioning and steering of effects are seamless as gunshots zip past, Spinners throttle across the screen and waves crash along the Sepulveda Wall in the film's climax.just feature a superior picture; it also offers a quantum leap in audio quality, drawing the viewer
