The Decurion Lanius is a cruel tank commander unique to the Sons of Horus. Recently, I’ve started fleshing them out into their own army and really taking on some of the bigger models they have to offer, which meant painting my Great Unclean One.

Next, I laid down some basic skin tones, ranging from Model Color Royal Purple (shadow), to Pink Horror (midtone), up to Kislev Flesh (highlight). It’s pretty desaturated at this point, but the gist is there.

Credit: Corrode The banner I went for a flayed skin attempt with Contrast Guilliman Flesh and Contrast Blood Angel Red on each side. The banner pole is Contrast Wyldwood Drukhari: The Drukhari, also known as Dark Eldar, are a faction of sadistic and hedonistic space elves who reside in the Webway. The colour can be used to paint their vehicles, soldiers, and infantry to add a darker and more ominous look to their aesthetic.

After I lay down these colors, it’s time for shading. I cover the model in liberal coats of Agrax Earthshade and Reikland Fleshshade to tint the skin and give it more color depth. These go on haphazardly, but I’ll pool around the sores and add streaks in key places like below open sores and wounds to give it the skin a stained appearance from whatever was seeping out. I’ll also add a bit of Coelia Greenshade where I want more green hues. Given the War Griffons’ love of Reaver-class Titans, you might be thinking that they’d excel with a Corsair, but that’s probably not their best choice. Gryphonicus doesn’t get access to its special wargear unless it uses Mainstay of the Legion to take a Reaver in place of something else, and Motive Sub-Reactors are honestly too good to pass up. I only keep the plates off that I plan to spray yellow because yellow is awful to paint on by hand and I do not own an airbrush, so this is all by hand, otherwise I built the rest of the model before painting which makes posing just a tad easier too.Nurgle Daemons are perfect for a new painter – They offer a ton of variety, but they’re very forgiving and take to Contrast paint very well. We’ll talk about a few different ways to paint them, but ultimately the big things you’re going to have to figure out are how you handle grime and snot on your minis. TheChirurgeon’s Method Instead, you’ll want to lean towards maniples that let you swap out a Warhound. Venator and Ferrox are both excellent choices that still allow you take advantage of their maniple trait. In a Venator, taking a second Reaver gives you two options for your free shot whenever a Warhound collapses a target’s shield, though you still only get to fire with one of the Titans each time it activates. However, having a pair of them gives you more choices on what weapons to fire with as well as better coverage of the board – it’s much harder to hide from two melta cannon Reavers than just one. It’s also useful for managing heat if you take a volcano cannon, since you can alternate which Reaver gets the free shot to keep your reactors under control. That’s just 10 of the 25 new Contrast paints – we’ve already had ideas for coruscating bolts of energy with Mantis Warrior Green and some filthy underhive terrain with Garaghak’s Sewer. The possibilities are truly endless! For the chipping, take a fine piece of sponge and use it to dab Rhinox Hide on the sharpest corners. Next I start hitting the pustules with Averland Sunset. I want these to be bright on the final model but I’m gonna cover them with Nurgle’s Rot, which will tint them green so I need them to be bright yellow. I add a dot of Flash Gitz Yellow to them as well. These guys are practically made for Contrast. You can almost smoosh them faster than building them. To make my life easier, I’ve mounted Mr Buzz Buzz on an old paintbrush handle because flightstands are evil flimsy little bastards of a thing sent down to earth just to mess with us. I’ve left those aside for my friend to deal with.

For other pustules I paint those with Bugman’s Glow, then highlight them with a mix of Bugman’s Glow and Emperor’s Children Pink. I’m also going to hit most of these with Nurgle’s Rot later, but I’ll go very heavy in areas I really want the effect to stand out.
