About this deal

The rotating internal cam makes the GriGri an “assisted braking” device; (photo/Alexandru Nika) What Is a GriGri? You could buy a Plus for use in all these venues, but I’m not sure why you would. It doesn’t perform as well in as many settings as other devices, which means that it stays in the gear closet more often. Ease of Use Sometimes, with the old GRIGRIs, the rope could escape the device when the cam was pulled up too high. Now, there’s a small stopper such that no matter how hard your partner whipped, that rope is not coming out of your belay device. Wahoo!

Petzl GriGri (available starting in 2019) is best if you want to save weight and money, and are confident in your belaying skills so you don’t need any extra safety features of the + version. Note: This is a confusing name, think of it like a GriGri 3. Petzl GriGri + is best if you want extra safety features: anti-panic handle stop and the ability to change between top rope and lead belay mode. Plus there is a steel insert to increase durability and longevity, particularly helpful if you consistently climb in sandy areas, or with dirty ropes.

Top 5 Tips for Proper GriGri Use

GriGris have a built-in plastic handle that allows for smooth and safe lowering. You should have verbal confirmation from a climber before lowering them whenever possible. Belaying is all about attention. While using a GriGri, every climber holds the life of their partner in their hands. The GriGri + only represents a good value under certain circumstances. If you’re an extremely heavy user, the extra life in the steel plates might mean that you can go longer before replacing your device. And if you’re worried about safety, the device features could provide valuable ease of mind. As a sidenote, the GriGri + seems like a real win for gyms that like to keep GriGri’s pre-rigged at each rope as many of the improvements are based on wear and safety. Designed ideally for experienced sport climbers and versatile enough to be used on all single climbing ropes, the Petzl GRIGRI is a performance belay device that w orks equally as well for lead climbing as it does for top roping. Now redesigned and coming in at a full 10g lighter than the GRIGRI 2 (2018), it can be used on all single dynamic 8.5 to 11mm ropes, but will perform optimally with 8.9 to 10.5mm diameter climbing ropes.

The GriGri slides down the side of the carabiner and the carabiner becomes cross-loaded. When cross-loaded you are using the weakest strength points of the carabiner and are at most risk of the biner failing This device has just one place for installing rope and it can't be used in climbing with half rope. All in all, you can’t go wrong with these GRIGRIs (or any, for that matter). More suited for beginner belayers, the GRIGRI+ has some extra safety and redundancies to keep you and your climbing partners happy. A more advanced belay device, the new GRIGRI has got you covered and will allow you to belay your best belay. My inner mathematician got SO excited when Petzl suggested that I do (as a follow-up to my GRIGRI 2 review) a comparison review of the GRIGRI+ and the new GRIGRI (the third one). Comparison = excel chart. And I excel at excel. Also, thanks Petzl for coming through on my deep down wish that I couldn’t fit in A Climber’s Christmas II.

Value

The GriGri + adds sensitivity and a more forgiving range on the lever, which makes controlling speed easier. Most climbers get used to the GriGri 2’s mechanism without too much trouble, but for new belayers (are you seeing a pattern here?) the Plus smooths the learning curve. Petzl’s rope compatibility comparison chart What We Don’t Like The Case of the Missing Tab We will not be held liable for any consequential loss caused by late or failed deliveries. Timed deliveries / Saturday & Sunday deliveries On multi-pitch outings, we like a more streamlined (and lighter) device. For sport cragging, the GriGri 2 is much more convenient to use. In high-wear areas, Petzl added beefy stainless-steel plates. Where the GriGri 2 would develop grooves after extended use, the GriGri + is much more resistant to wear.
