About this deal

In February 2016, Key Food Stores acquired the trademark and rights to the SuperFresh brand name during the A&P bankruptcy auction. [8] On March 11, 2016, Key Food relaunched the SuperFresh brand from their location in Paterson, New Jersey, formerly a Food Basics. On July 20, 2015, A&P announced that it was filing for bankruptcy for a second time. The company liquidated in late 2015, selling as many stores as possible to competitors, and closing the remainder. During this process, all Superfresh stores were either closed or rebannered as Acme or ShopRite.

Price is one thing, but value is slightly different. And shoppers clearly believe supermarkets could do more. Indeed, separate Which? research shows trust in supermarkets is dropping as prices rise. Ocado customers were impressed with its range of products, the availability of its delivery slots and its customer service at delivery, awarding it five stars for these measures. For supermarket groceries, it is the responsibility of manufacturers to make sure products are suitably labelled. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) says dates must be based on robust evidence. Online grocery deliveries became a lifeline during the pandemic and remain so for many. Ocado has jumped to first place for online shopping after finishing joint-second last year, beating the previous winner Iceland , which has now swapped places with Ocado to come joint-second with Waitrose. The good news is when we compared shoppers' expectations against reality, we found shoppers thought most types of perishable groceries would have a shorter life than they actually do.

We surveyed 3,007 members of the public in October 2022 for our annual supermarkets survey, quizzing them on their experiences with those they use most often. On November 14, 2012, A&P announced the closure of three New Jersey SuperFresh locations in Marlton, Westmont, and Plainsboro. These stores were liquidated in January 2013, leaving Manahawkin, Ocean City, and Wildwood as the only remaining stores in New Jersey. [7] Ocado is not a Which? Recommended Provider, as it’s regularly the second most expensive supermarket in our monthly price comparison. A&P Looks To Close 32 Stores, Unveils New Management Team, Seeks Re-Org Extension" (Press release). Best Met. March 2011 . Retrieved 2016-03-14.

According to our survey*, raw fish is the product households are most likely to throw away if it's past its use-by date by a day or two - although worryingly 8% said they would still eat it regardless and 33% would consider eating it if it looked and smelled OK. Use-by dates are about food safety, and getting them right is crucial. Too long and you risk consumers' safety. Too short and you increase food waste and dent profit margins. So who sets them and how? Use-by dates are about food safety. Once an item's use-by date has passed, it could be dangerous and should not be eaten. Worryingly, our undercover shoppers took delivery of two items - both pots of single cream - which should not have been sold: one was a day past its use-by date from Sainsbury's and the other, from Ocado, was two days out of date. These may not have been safe to eat and had to be thrown away.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. to Sell 25 Superfresh Stores as Part of Turnaround Strategy" (Press release). The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. 13 April 2011 . Retrieved 2013-09-03. We also asked how satisfied shoppers are on the whole with their supermarket and whether they would recommend it. These two questions allow us to calculate our Which? customer scores. For those who did their shopping in-store, we asked them to rate the shop's appearance is as well as queuing times. We also asked whether there are friendly staff available to help with any queries.

Some 17% of people admitted they would eat pre-cut fruit or veg a day or two past its use-by date regardless as well - with 59% considering eating it if it looked or smelled OK. Short dates and gone-off food lead to inconvenience and waste. Nearly a third (29%) of online shoppers who weren't fully satisfed with their groceries told us they throw away groceries they are not happy with*. More than a quarter (28%) changed their meal plans to eat them as soon as possible. Just 13% have refused to accept them. An Iceland spokesperson added, 'These findings are not reflective of our approach to providing the freshest products possible.' It scores poorly on value for money, whether you shop in-store or online. Shoppers rate the availability of its groceries badly, as well as its choice of substitutions in deliveries. It's important to remember you should not eat food past its use-by date even if it looks and smells fine - it could still be unsafe. In 2007, A&P acquired the Pathmark supermarket chain and, in 2008, announced plans to convert eight of the 13 Philadelphia-area SuperFresh stores to its new Pathmark Sav-A-Center banner. The company planned to renovate the remaining SuperFresh stores into its successful "Fresh" format (used in its A&P Fresh Markets). The change would re-position the Superfresh brand as an upscale banner. [4]

Aldi comes in joint second place for shopping in-store and is the only supermarket to be named a Which? Recommended Provider for its all-round great performance – doing particularly well on value and the quality of its products. More than one in 10 online grocery shoppers (12%) told us the freshness of their groceries is the most important factor for them.Shoppers told us that salad and prepared fruit are the perishable groceries they expect to have the shortest lives. But it was actually carrot batons which had the shortest life of all the products in our investigation, with an average of 3.7 days left until the end of their use by date. On the other hand, yogurts had the longest life with an average of 23.2 days left until their use by date. In an innovative new study, undertaken with researchers from the Consumer Data Research Centre at the University of Leeds, we've identified 50 of the most at-risk areas for finding affordable food in the UK. Following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, A&P announced in early 2011 its intention to sell or close 32 stores across its six supermarket banners. Included in the group were eight SuperFresh stores and one former Superfresh store in Glasgow, Delaware, which had just been converted to the Pathmark Sav-A-Center brand two years prior. [5]
