About this deal

Sainsbury’s has now become the first retailer to label its own brand aluminium coffee pods as recyclable, available in stores from the 12th September Please note some larger products are delivered to kerb-side (the street outside your home), it is at the drivers discretion if they can deliver the item to another location on the property. Still, what’s remaining can easily be rinsed off, leaving a clean aluminium case that can be dropped into a recycling bin. Dualit recommends putting the capsules in a colander and then rinsing in washing up water. Scottish Highlands & Islands postcodes: AB, FK, HS, IV, KA, KW, PA, PH, ZE, LL58-LL78, IM, TR, PO30-41 Claire Hughes, Director of Product and Innovation at Sainsbury’s says:“We’re always looking for new ways to help our customers live more sustainably at home, and key to that is making sure any changes are small and easy to implement.

Earlier this year, Sainsbury’s launched its new brand mission ‘Helping Everyone Eat Better’, reflecting its mission to encourage and empower customers to make a positive change for their health and the planet too. Until now, it’s been widely believed that aluminium coffee pods are too small to be recycled and need to be recycled via specialist collection schemes – but that’s not the case I’d have thought that the Dualit EcoPress would require a degree of pressure to perform the action, but this wasn’t the case. A hard push is all that’s required to force the capsule inside out. This is where the Dualit EcoPress comes in: it squeezes the coffee out of Nespresso and Nespresso-compatible pods so the aluminium containers can be added to your recycle bin, while the coffee grounds can be used elsewhere, such as for compost. Design and FeaturesYou may be thinking, why bother? Well, filling up a recycling bag of your favourite Vertuo coffee pods needs storage somewhere, then you have to drop off the bags (or have them collected), and you don’t get to reuse the coffee grounds. The Dualit EcoPress will only work with original Nespresso (or compatibles) aluminium pods; it doesn’t accept pods designed to be biodegradable or that are made of plastic. It isn’t compatible with Nespresso Vertuo capsules or capsules for rival pod systems, either. Performance That’s why we decided to challenge the notion that aluminium coffee pods can’t be recycled and with consumers more concerned about the planet than ever before, it felt like a natural place to look.

In This Article

As with the Dualit EcoPress for the standard capsules, the Dualit EcoPress for Vertuo is a plastic device designed to push a Vertuo Pod inside out, spilling its used coffee grounds into the bin, leaving the aluminium shell for recycling. Currently, customers are advised to recycle coffee pods via specialist collection schemes which aren’t always convenient, so the EcoPress will be welcomed by many. Once the coffee has been separated, users can put the remaining coffee in home compost bins, in kerbside food waste bins, or in their garden – using small quantities around plants*.
