I like that it has a bit of an iconic feel, that it suggests something that’s pretty common in the mercenary life (long nights, be it fighting, traveling to the next job, or waiting for shit to go down), and that it’s a play on words: ‘Mechs can be thought of as “long” knights.

There isn’t too much silver/steel on these guys; metallics weren’t used as commonly then. If I were to do these again I’d probably go up to Ironbreaker instead of Leadbelcher for a brighter look.

Red

Emma: Gutrippa Flesh is terrific and will save a lot of time when painting Kruleboyz or Gretchin as it gives an excellent base colour and shade that suits these boyz down to the ground. It’s really great for camo cloth too! Straps, holsters, and handles of weapons will often be leather, and I like a warm dark brown. Contrary to my normal techniques I only have one edge highlight on here, but I’ll point you in the right direction for highlight #2. It’s a good idea to paint the whole model with thinned blue to ensure an even coat. Even moreso than with the modern look; going for a clean look is paramount. Always be ready to clean up after the fact.

Mountains: Base coat is Celestra Grey, camo elements are Mechanicus Standard Grey > Nuln Oil pin wash > Ulthuan Grey > White Scar Scrubland: Base coat is Zandri Dust, camo elements are Deathworld Forest > Seraphim Sepia pin wash > Ushabti Bone > Wraithbone (note this is a base paint)These factions are known in the Warhammer 40k universe for their blue armor and machinery, and Calgar Blue is a perfect match to paint these miniatures. This shade of blue is deeper and richer than Lothern Blue, which can create a more striking and vibrant look for the miniatures. For this step thin some Russ Grey and do some thin lines around the prominent edges. They’ll look quite stark against the Macragge Blue, but the even starker inner highlight later will actually make it look less overpowering (as counter-intuitive as that sounds). Step 3: Adding a bit of Contrast Before you even begin to paint to your models here are some steps that everyone should take regardless of whether they are painting Ultramarines. This step looks like there’s a lot of work involved, there really isn’t but because of the amount of little bits I’ved bundled them into one step. For the insignia if you haven’t been blessed with the secrets to applying transfers I will outline it for you here. Unlike most Space Marine models, the Victrix Guard have two very large areas of color, the armor and their capes. Rather than basecoat the caps by hand, I wanted to paint some nice and smooth gradients with the airbrush so I masked off all the armor with a combination of Tamiya Tape and Masking Putty.

Emma: This colour is all about punch, it’s so bright and powerful. Doomfire Magenta straight out of the pot gives you a vivid pink for cloth or magic spells. It also suits Daughters of Khaine or Escher Gangers if you want some cool pink hair colours.
