Cyrus’ second-generation soundBuds2 ‘True wireless Stereo’ in-ear headphones build upon the solid foundations of the first iteration. The TWS50s also offer the option of listening in mono, on just one headphone, should you wish. It’s perhaps useful if you want to hear your surroundings (there’s no ANC onboard) or conserve the battery. The Cyrus soundBuds have the right tonal makeup. I’ve been comparing them to the Sennheiser IE 40 Pro, a pair of “pro” wired earphones from a leading headphone maker. Side by side, both pairs sound fairly lean and clean, without the inflated low-end and smoothing used to make mass-market earphones easier on the ear. I actually used a different pair of tips to review the Cyrus soundBuds 2’s sound because I found the bundled silicone tips pretty terrible. Their shape appeared to collapse too much if they’re not a good fit for your ear canal, and I wasn’t able to get a decent seal with any of the three sizes.

So it is quite clear that one manufacturer after the other has come up with such solutions in recent months, first and foremost, of course, proven headphone specialists, but interestingly enough also many a manufacturer who has so far made little or no appearance in the headphone sector, including the English high-end hi-fi manufacturer Cyrus Audio Ltd. The case feels relatively cheap, then, but the plastic at least keeps the weight down and there’s a useful charge indicator on the front. The LEDs light up when you put the Cyrus soundBuds 2 earphones in, to show they’re charging and the power remaining in the case. They also light up when you plug the case itself in, over USB-C. SoundMagic has released a pair of true wireless in-ears that offer decent sound-per-pound value. If this is the extent of your budget, you’ll get a competitive battery life, one of the lightest and most comfortable earbuds we’ve tested to date and an expansive listen that betters the cheaper Cyrus soundBuds. Slight latency was noticeable with SBC, but not bad enough to put you off watching some YouTube or Netflix while travelling. Sound quality The Cyrus soundBuds 2’s dynamics are far more limited, making music sound flat and rhythmically inert. It isn’t much the tonal makeup of these earphones that’s the issue; but that they can’t deliver tunes with all that much drive or energy.You can confidently do without cables, and more and more manufacturers are also convinced of this when it comes to in-ear headphones. Surprisingly, one of them is now a company that has not been active in this area before, namely the English high-end hi-fi manufacturer Cyrus Audio Ltd. They are putting the Cyrus soundBuds in the race for the customers’ favour.

The Cyrus soundBuds 2 include 6mm drivers. I find such drivers often provide the best balance of power and precision in earphones, despite their small size. However, this isn’t really the case here. The charging case isn’t flashy, either. Its finish is shined up to a high gloss, but it’s plastic inside and out.

You’ll be disappointed to learn, then, that they fail to live up to these expectations – but not in every respect. Verdict:The Cyrus soundBuds 2 produce a clean and neutral sound but I wouldn’t say they offer anything more than countless other brands selling true wireless earbuds around this price point. I think they sounded a little disappointing to my ears but perhaps I was just expecting a little too much because of the pedigree behind the Cyrus name. The fit was a problem for my ears and perhaps the earbuds might have sounded better if the fit had matched my ear size. There’s nothing wrong the Cyrus soundBuds 2 but I think you can do a bit better for the money by looking at something like the excellent Soundpeats H1. We switch to The Streets’ Fit But You Know It and while it’s a decent, relatively transparent listen, the difference in dynamics and bass depth are laid bare. It’s less exciting and entertaining than our comparison set, albeit at a more affordable price.
