Although terrified of the water, Olivia has been persuaded by her boyfriend to join him for a once in a lifetime cruise to Antarctica to help their new business. McCulloch] has an eye for edgy and unusual settings, and the new novel is easily as good as her first.Alleen al deze uitnodigende, intrigerende en onheilspellende cover, maakt me erg nieuwsgierig naar het boek. I liked how the protagonist was cut off from the majority of technology - it made the story more claustrophobic and gripping. I also feel like some of the flashback scenes should have been written in italics or something for a way to visually break it up from the rest of the prose. She grappled with her own insecurities and insincerities that made it difficult for her to believe that she was capable of standing up for herself and making the tough choices.
The success of this book is due to the fact that McCulloch took the same trip and could rely on experience. He has big dreams as an art dealer and has put together a one-of-a-kind show on a cruise to the Antarctic. This didn’t diminish my suspense because then I was muttering at my device when Olivia was making the wrong assumptions and putting herself into worse danger. I feel mainly the fault lay in how focused the story was on the character, Olivia, herself and the personal growth that she needed from this trip, to overcome the mental and emotional trauma that has so severely plagued her in the past. I was glad she was able to make some friends while on board, as this did seem to give her some comfort. I felt that the main character was quite unsympathetic (not necessarily a problem) and that we never really got inside her head until the very end (a bit of a problem).
