Minehead under 15s faced top of the league side Staplegrove Sinners at home on Sunday, after a closely fought first half the away side showed their determination to produce a 1-4 win.
There were some great midfield battles early on as both teams fought for possession and to gain a foothold in the game. The away side were first to test the Minehead keeper Ben Bloys but he was quickly off his line to gather a through ball. He was in action again shortly after when a free kick was floated into the box but was equal to the header. Another attack saw Lewis Leach clear for a corner and a headed effort was wide of the post. Minehead settled and started playing some good football, Tom Barber made a penetrating run down the left crossing for Ben Summersgill who’s shot was parried out only to be fired back in by Olly Prescott and although the keeper did well to get a hand to it Prescott followed it in with a headed goal and Minehead were 1-0 up. Staplegrove came close to equalising with a well taken free kick but Minehead were saved by the bar and the follow up header sailed over. Tyler High and Finley Foreman were both having a good game in the middle of the park making some great interceptions and attacking runs. Olly Prescott combined well with Tom Barber who’s cross found Finley Foreman but his shot was over the bar. Charlie Disney and Callum Dewar made a number of good runs out of defence as Minehead started to see some good possession. Tom Barber intercepted a goal kick and quickly tried to chip the keeper but it was just over then on the stroke of half time Staplegrove equalised with a well taken headed goal from a corner.
Staplegrove came out strongly in the second half putting Minehead under great pressure, Ben Bloys had to make another save from a long range effort and Ajay Shopland, Riley Merrick, Lewis Leach and Charlie Disney were all having to work hard in defence as the away side kept pressing. Staplegrove hit the bar twice within minutes then a high cross helped by the wind crept in under the bar and they were 1-2 up. Olly Prescott, Issac Sweetland and Russell Lindley linked up well with a counter attack but the final ball was well defended. Ben Bloys was called into action again making another save from a long range effort, Ajay Shopland, Lewis Leach and Riley Merrick had to make a number of clearances as Minehead were sat far too deep inviting pressure. A good ball into the box from Staplegrove saw Ben Bloys pull off a superb triple save from close range then a free kick from outside the box was also saved well by Bloys and parried out with the follow up header clearing the bar. Staplegrove went 1-3 up after another shot was parried out but this time the follow up shot was rifled into the roof of the net then just before the end they made it 1-4 following a corner that was punched out only to be struck back in at pace leaving the keeper no chance.
