Minehead Under 15s were away to top of the league Staplegrove Sinners on Sunday and after a closely fought goalless first half Staplegrove finished strongly winning 6-1.
The home side had started well, Minehead’s defence of Lewis Leach, Riley Merrick, Callum Dewar and Ajay Shopland were all having to work hard and made a number of early clearances and good interception’s. A counter attack forced a corner which Ben Bloys in the Minehead goal came out to gather and good kick found Tom Barber on the left who made a great run crossing into the box but Finley Foreman headed wide. There were some great midfield battles and hard tackles particularly by Finley Foreman and Tyler High who was having a good game seeing plenty of the ball, working hard to retain possession and playing some good football. Another attacking run on the left wing by Tom Barber ended with a good cross which was met by Olly Prescott but his shot was just wide of the post. Minehead came close again to opening the scoring through Charlie Disney with a long range effort following a cleared corner but the keeper saved well. Ben Bloys was also called into action at the other end and saved well from a free kick. Another great cross from Tom Barber was headed clear and Lewis Leach long range strike went over the bar. Ben Bloys had to make another save from a headed corner then a Minehead counter attack involving Tyler High and Man of the Match Finley Foreman saw Issac Sweetland chase a through ball into the box but the keeper was quickly off his line to gather. Tom Barber and Olly Prescott linked up well but another cross into the box went begging. Some good play by Issac Sweetland set up Tyler High just before the break but his shot was just over. Staplegrove went ahead early in the second half with a penalty then soon after Minehead were level through Tom Barber after another penalty. A good run down the wing by the home side saw a low hard cross into the six yard box which was put away from close range and Staplegrove were 2-1 up. Shortly after it was 3-1 after a corner was headed in leaving the keeper no chance. Minehead’s heads dropped when a good counter attack saw a low hard strike find the corner of the net for 4-1. Ben Bloys made a great save tipping over for a corner which was then cleared off the line by Charlie Disney. Russell Lindley and Ben Summersgill were both working hard chasing every ball as Minehead tried to get back in the game but as they pushed forward Staplegrove countered at every opportunity. Ajay Shopland had to make a goal line clearance but there was no stopping a great long range strike which found the top corner for 5-1. Soon after it was 6-1 following a well taken free kick then at the other end Ben Bloys made a great save from another penalty. Although Minehead were pleased to hear the final whistle they all played with great spirit and dignity to the very end.
