About this deal

Knopfler doesn't give his characters names like Springsteen always does ("Rollergirl" is the best he can do) but the storytelling is definitely on a similar path. A strong cinematic feel soaks the album from the opening "Tunnel Of Love" (featuring a fitting extract form Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel Waltz") which depicts a carnivalesque tale of romance and possible loss through "Romeo and Juliet" and the amusingly playful "Skateaway".

The mofi version of this album makes you LOVE to just listen to the music, whereas the orig UKs are better to let it spin and rock out to because the detailed instrument separation isn't as accessible to listen to. The second single release was " Skateaway," and the third and final single from the album was the lengthy opening track, " Tunnel of Love," with its intro "The Carousel Waltz" by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, which only reached the number 54 position in the UK.In his retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted that Making Movies "ranks among the band's finest work. The title of the album is taken from a line in the song " Skateaway" and from the outtake "Making Movies. I've compared all of these vinyl releases with clean copies and I can definitely say the Mofi beats them all. The song is filled with romantic projections, though in real life most women would run away from a creepy carnival worker hitting on them.

Mark Knopfler's songwriting took a significant leap on "Making Movies" as if it were time to try more innovative techniques following two albums. Dire Straits expanded into a quintet when keyboard player Alan Clark and Californian guitarist Hal Lindes were recruited as full-time group members shortly after the album's release in October 1980. That 2023 release I have also suffers a slightly noisy sound floor so I suppose it’s a good comparison of the two mixes of that song. You know you're in the presence of sonic greatness as soon as the first few seconds of the opening "Tunnel of Love" pass, as the introductory passage built on organ and piano – new additions to Dire Straits' palette – intertwine with the unmistakable coil-spring twang of Knopfler's guitar.Having turned his back to superstardom after Dire Straits' _On every street_ album has done Knopfler's music a lot of good, and as he didn't have to play "Sultans of swing", "Money for nothing" and "Walk of life" anymore on his tour with Emmylou Harris it seems people are finally seeing him as a solo artist instead of that man from Dire straits.

Dire Straits also benefits from crucial contributions from Bruce Springsteen pianist Roy Bittan and the departure of rhythm guitarist David Knopfler.

Expresso love" is still a great rocker though and the ballad "Hand in hand" is also a Dire straits favorite of mine. Making Movies Is A Rock Masterpiece After Dire Straits second album was criticized as more of the same, Mark Knopfler responded with a rock masterpiece titled Making Movies. David appears on video playing "Solid Rock" and "Les Boys" live in concert, but these performances preceded the recording. Tunnel of Love was a little closer for me comparing the two but still have the give the nod to this release.

Skateaway" is another brilliant song, the only song on which Knopfler really shows us what a great guitar player he is.But whatever will happen in the future, he'll never sound as inspired and brilliant again as on this wonderful album. Iovine had also worked on Springsteen's Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums, and he was instrumental in recruiting E-Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan for the Making Movies sessions. The extra-wide 45RPM grooves on this edition provide previously unattainable detail, information, and soundstaging. Making Movies is the third studio album by British rock band Dire Straits, released on 17 October 1980 by Vertigo Records internationally, Warner Bros. This is another story song, but of a hot young girl that skates around the city listening and bobbing to music on her headphones engrossed in the fantasies of the songs and oblivious to the world.
