About this deal

It is however, telling that despite the picturesque calm of Tuscany, Mariam still feels the pressure of a heavy hand, crushing her, and only when she engages in the subterfuge demanded of her by the Agency, does that hand eventually release. The power of this book is that it tells this devastating story through the eyes of those who suffered and survived because of love, the human relationship, and the power of what makes life worth living. For me, a book should gather pace, perhaps a slow start as we get used to the characters, but then building to a crescendo. If you're a fan of the espionage/spy thriller genre, I can pretty much guarantee you'll love this book. This may reflect real life, but I found "Damascus Station" a little too easy to put down, for a really cracking thriller.Standout debut from a veteran former CIA officer … packed with insider knowledge and the story itself feels completely authentic. Few world leaders in recent decades have proven themselves to be more savage than Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A spy story – of securing an asset for vital intelligence capture; a love story – of star-crossed lovers; two-sides that never should mix, a Romeo and Juliet for modern times; a survival story – of the Ikhwan rebels existing against all odds against the brutal onslaught of the Assad war machine and a human story – of familial links, mixed motives, past histories and ultimately, their intrinsic ties to a regime that would ultimately destroy them.

The CIA dispatches Sam to Paris to recruit Mariam, where she is on a Syrian delegation to a conference. Carrying on the traditions of LeCarre and all of the other greats the twist and turns will keep you flipping the pages and questioning your self all night! As the novel progresses the tension ramps up, each progressive sentence feels like it could all collapse. After the disappearance of an American spy, CIA case officer Sam travels to Paris to recruit a Syrian woman, Miriam, who knows the ins and outs of the Syrian Palace. The denouement of Damascus Station is satisfying, especially after the phenomenal intensity of the scenes leading up to it, and one that I was so delighted to see.As the duo traverses the cultural and political landscapes of Paris and Damascus, the novel delves into the intricate dance between intelligence agencies and the delicate balance of power in the Middle East. This superb debut from a former CIA Analyst is one of the most striking spy novels since Mick Herron's magnificent Slow Horses in 2010. As interesting as the book is, the author spends a lot of time in my opinion in unnecessary minutiae.
