There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, ( BC)who [ j] do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For ( BD)the law of ( BE)the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from ( BF)the law of sin and death. 3 For ( BG)what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, ( BH)God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who ( BI)do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For ( BJ)those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, ( BK)the things of the Spirit. 6 For ( BL)to be [ k]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because ( BM)the [ l]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, ( BN)nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? ( Z) By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey ( AA)—whether you are slaves to sin, ( AB) which leads to death, ( AC) or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God ( AD) that, though you used to be slaves to sin, ( AE) you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching ( AF) that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin ( AG) and have become slaves to righteousness. Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, ( AT)sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. ( AU)For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that ( AV)in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.For I consider that the sufferings of this present time ( DB)are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for ( DC)the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation ( DD)was subjected to futility, not willingly, but ( DE)because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that ( DF)the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that ( DG)the whole creation ( DH)has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have ( DI)the firstfruits of the Spirit, ( DJ)groan inwardly as ( DK)we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, ( DL)the redemption of our bodies. 24 For ( DM)in this hope we were saved. Now ( DN)hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we ( DO)wait for it with patience.

God has given us some very clear instructions in His Word as to how we are to live for Him. These include the command to love one another (John 13:34-35), the call to follow Him at the cost of denying our own desires (Matthew 16:24), the exhortation to care for the poor and needy (James 1:27), and the warning to not fall into sinful behaviors like those who don’t know God (1 Thessalonians 5:6-8). Jesus summed up a life lived for God when a teacher of the law asked Him the most important of commandments. Jesus replied, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. But of Israel he says, ( HU)“All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.” The Remnant of Israel What shall we say then? ( A)Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who ( B)died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that ( C)as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus ( D)were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were ( E)buried with Him through baptism into death, that ( F)just as Christ was raised from the dead by ( G)the glory of the Father, ( H)even so we also should walk in newness of life. Sin’s Advantage in the Law Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! 16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. 17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. 18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living. Or do you not know, brothers [ d]—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For ( AS)a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. [ e] 3 Accordingly, ( AT)she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
