Minehead under 15s faced a strong and well organised Rhode Lane at home on Sunday and were unlucky not to share the points but the second in the league side fought hard to hold on for a 0-1 win.
Rhode Lane started well and passed the ball around with confidence dominating much of the of early possession. Issac Sweetland made a good headed clearance from a corner and Lewis Leach had to intercept a good through ball as the away side pushed forward. Minehead were caught by an early goal after a good break down the left and a low cross into box was neatly slotted in for 0-1. Minehead’s back four of Callum Dewar, Lewis Leach, Ajay Shopland and Charlie Disney were having to work really hard as Rhode Lane kept the pressure up attacking at every opportunity but Ben Bloys in the Minehead goal was having little to do. Minehead started to put some good passes together with Olly Prescott, Finley Foreman, Tyler High and Tom Barber all combining well. Tom Barber tried a shot from outside the box but it was over the bar, Tyler High floated a free kick into the box but Finley Foreman could only poke it wide of the post. Ajay Shopland made a great saving challenge as Rhode Lane broke free on goal and he was called into action soon after and again stopped an attack and played a nice ball forward that Lewis Leach picked up in midfield making a good run before shooting from long range but saw it go over the bar. Rhode Lane came close to extending their lead just before half time following a corner but it was headed wide. Minehead came out fighting and were working harder, closing down better and looking dangerous. Archie Dascombe and Olly Prescott linked up well but the cross was cleared, Issac Sweetland was causing problems with his long throws into the box but Minehead failed to capitalise then Finley Foreman played a nice ball across the box for Olly Prescott who’s curled shot looked a certain goal but the keeper did well to get a hand to it. The away sides first attack on goal ended with a shot over the bar, then a corner shortly after was again headed wide but again Rhode Lane were limited to very few shots on goal in the second half with Ben Bloys only having to make a handful of saves. Tom Barber made a good run up the wing crossing well but the keeper was out quickly catching at full stretch. Rhode Lane tried a number of long balls over the top but Ajay Shopland and Charlie Disney were always there to clear the danger which helped earn them joint Man of the Match awards. Minehead had a really good spell of possession towards the end and kept the away side pinned in their own half. Olly Prescott, Tyler High, Russell Lindley and Tom Barber were being fed by Finley Foreman and Archie Dascombe in the middle of the park and numerous balls were put into dangerous areas but as the away side sat deeper it was proving difficult to get that final ball through. Minehead worked hard to find a deserved equaliser but Rhode Lane defended well and held on for all the points.
