Minehead under 15s Football report

Minehead under 15s faced Wellington Town Youth at home on Sunday and secured all the points with a convincing 6-3 win.

Minehead started well and were soon in control passing the ball well and keeping possession, Olly Prescott tried his luck from the edge of the box but the keeper was equal to it. Ajay Shopland played a long searching ball into the box from the defence but the keeper was quickly out to gather. Wellington’s first attack came from the right wing and a good cross whipped in was headed clear by Lewis Leach for a corner which was cleared by Riley Merrick. Archie Dascombe and Tom Barber combined well as Minehead pushed forward again, the ball was laid back to Ajay Shopland who played another good ball into the box but keeper was first to it. Ben Bloys in the Minehead goal was then called into action at the other end and saved well. Some good passing between Riley Merrick,Archie Dascombe and Russell Lindley ended with a strike from Henry Murrell which was well held. Minehead opened the scoring following a good move out of defence involving Charlie Disney, Issac Sweetland and Olly Prescott who finished neatly beating the keeper at his near post. Issac Sweetland was in action again making a good run into the box but the keeper did well to block the shot, a good run out of defence by Lewis Leach saw along ball put into the box which was met by Olly Prescott but the keeper was there again to deny Minehead. Olly Prescott came close again soon after following some good work by Henry Murrell but the keeper parried out for a corner which was well cleared. Lewis Leach was having a good game at the back and made a number of headed clearances and challenges as the away side tried to push forward for an equaliser. A great counter attack saw Minehead go 2-0 up after Henry Murrell played a super long ball out of defence following a corner and Wellington could do nothing to keep up with the pace of Issac Sweetland as he made it into the box and chipped the keeper for a brilliant goal. Some good link up play in the middle by Archie Dascombe and Tom Barber set up a strike from the edge of the box for Olly Prescott which was heading goalwards but deflected out for a corner, the clearance only found Charlie Disney and his long range effort struck the post, Olly Prescott followed in but the keeper made another good stop. Wellington pulled one back just before half time with a well taken finish following a good cross into the box but Minehead struck straight back making it 3-1 when Archie Dascombe, Olly Prescott and Tom Barber combined well to put Henry Murrell through who made no mistake with only the keeper to beat.

Minehead were straight on the attack after the break, Henry Murrell made a fine individual run down the left wing to the byline cutting it back for Olly Prescott whose fierce shot cannoned off the bar. Tom Barber also came close with a great effort but the keeper pulled off a great save, Barber was also involved in Minehead’s fourth goal after playing in Henry Murrell whose shot was blocked by the keeper but bounced up and Issac Sweetland was there to head in from close range. Second half keeper Callum Dewar made a good save at the other end punching wide a well hit shot from the edge of the box. A quick counter saw Minehead go 5-1 up through Ben Summersgill who chipped the keeper following some good link up play with Tom Barber and Henry Murrell. He came close to getting a second soon after when Man of The Match Lewis Leach played a great ball through and a nice chip beat the keeper but clipped the post on its way out for a goal kick. Wellington pulled another back with a cracking long range effort that flew into the top corner for 5-2 then soon after Ajay Shopland won the ball in the middle of the park passing down the wing to Tom Barber who played a great one two with Olly Prescott who curled the ball into the roof of the net for 6-2. Ben Summersgill hit the post again in the final minutes and Wellington pulled another goal back with a fine in swinging corner that the keeper couldn’t keep out and an entertaining game ended 6-3.
