The only concern for text clarity is the WRGB subpixel structure, which is an issue we saw on the first batch of QD-OLED monitors. There’s some blurring around text as you sit close to the monitor, but I never found it distracting while using the display. You have to get very close to the screen to notice, so although text clarity is a problem compared to a traditional LCD monitor, it’s far from a deal breaker. Superb gaming Jacob Roach / Digital Trends The LG 27GR95QE-B boasts a 27-inch OLED panel with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 0.03 response time. The OLED module’s brightness is rated at 200 cd/m2 while its contrast is listed at 1500000:1. This model is capable of fantastic HDR performance even if it doesn’t reach the usual 1000 cd/m2 peak outputs from its mini-LED counterparts. The main competition it has is the Alienware 34 QD-OLED, which says a lot about how excellent the UltraGear OLED 27 really is. LG’s advantage here is a slightly lower price and much higher refresh rate, finally bringing competitive and cinematic gaming experiences in balance. The Vivid HDR mode can reach up to 800-nits for 3% and lower sizes, 700-nits for 10% and 130-nits for 100%, but it over-exposes some bright parts and has a bluish tint. Either way, it falls short of the specified 1000-nit peak brightness. LG plans to release a firmware update in April to improve the brightness performance. HDR
Apart from the standard image settings (brightness, contrast, color temperature, etc.), the LG 27GR95QE also offers some advanced options, including four gamma modes, 6-axis hue/saturation, sharpness, color temperature fine-tuning in 500K increments, aspect ratio control (full wide, original and just scan) and Auto Input Switch. Anyway the process itself is nice and easy to use and the results, as reported by the software based on the device you’re using look very good. Keep in mind that the calibration will only be as good as the device you’re using, but the same could be said for software profiling anyway. There’s no options in the software to use a “correction matrix” or to profile your meter against a reference device, so the accuracy might not be as good as software where that’s possible – like Calman Ultimate for instance which includes a correction matrix for WOLED panels. However, this is free software from LG, and the results will be better and more practical than software profiling, so it’s great to see it included. You can of course calibrate the other preset mode to different targets if you want. It’s a shame there’s no calibration support for HDR though. Brightness and Contrast At 27 inches, the pixel density is excellent on the UltraGear OLED 27. Text looks super sharp, and images look vibrant thanks to the OLED panel. You’re spending more for fewer pixels, but that’s not really important once you sit down and look at the monitor. OLED panels have so far largely been restricted to large-screen televisions. For desktop/PC gamers, that meant having to deal with LCD screens (be it TN, IPS, VA panels) while monitor manufacturers get the technology down to a much more manageable size. However, it seems the wait is finally over. OLED panels at the size of 27”-32” are finally getting some much needed attention, and that too with higher refresh rate capability. In early April 2023 LG released an updated firmware for the 27GR95QE designed to supposedly help improve screen brightness. We have unfortunately had to return our screen sample, but our friends over at Monitors Unboxed have updated the firmware on their screen (done via the LG OnScreen Control software) and re-tested brightness in both SDR and HDR modes. They confirmed there was no change at all to HDR brightness in Gamer 1 mode, which has the ~6500K colour temp. There are 7 monitors using the same panel with different design, features, connectivity options, warranty and pricing.
The LG 27GR95QE-B renders more than 100% sRGB and 98% DCI-P3 for stunning color in games and movies. Its default accuracy isn’t great when it is measured against the sRGB gamut, with its deltaE average reaching 3.71. However, that changes if you test it relative to DCI-P3 with an excellent dE average of only 0.81. Using the monitor’s sRGB mode did not help much, but it did limit the dE score to 2.51, which is better and more balanced. The Screen Saver function seems a sensible one to leave turned on, as it will turn the screen off if it detects no change to the image for an extended period of time. We never saw this happen unnecessarily during any normal usage, even on pretty static desktop applications. It worked as intended in our usage when we left the screen alone fully.As long as you let these features operate as intended and don’t leave the screen showing bright static elements for a long time, the LG 27GR95QE shouldn’t burn-in. Features Regardless, these issues will happen over hundreds and hundreds of hours of playing the same kind of content, so don’t worry about it too much…just a little. Calibrating it reduced that dE average to an excellent 0.73, making it suitable for editing work. The monitor is used for editing and content creation in either sRGB or DCI-P3 formats, so it’s more than just a gaming display. The bezels surrounding the OLED panel may not be the narrowest I’ve ever seen, but they only measure 8mm at the sides and 10mm at the bottom, so I’m not complaining. All up weight is 7.35Kg with the stand accounting for 2.3kg of that.
